Lawrence Piazza, MD has been practicing general ophthalmology in Maine since 1992. After working for two years for a small group practice, Dr. Piazza established Coastal Eye Care, PA in 1994 to pursue his interests in cataract and intraocular lens implant surgery and glaucoma. With over 15 years practicing in Maine, Dr. Piazza has performed over 8000 cataract surgeries with lens implants. As the medical director of Coastal Eye Care, PA, he has been able to provide state of the art ongoing medical and surgical eye care for the patients of Downeast Maine. Dr. Piazza has a particular interest in new technology intraocular lens implants and has attended extensive continuing medical education courses remaining current in such topics as presbyopic correcting, astigmatic and aspheric IOLs. Dr. Piazza was the first ophthalmologist in Maine to implant the ReSTOR® multifocal presbyopic correcting lens in June of 2005. Since then, he has implanted several hundred such lenses including ReZoom™ and Crystalens® further refining his technique to assist patients in decreasing their dependency on glasses and in most cases becoming completely independent of glasses post-operatively. He has recently begun to implant the TORIC IOL designed to eliminate or render insignificant any preexisting corneal astigmatism in cataract patients, again decreasing dependency on spectacles. Finally, the standard IOL technology has made significant leaps moving towards aspheric vs. spherical IOLs with Dr. Piazza on the leading edge of this technology. The result of such a shift has resulted in significantly improved post-operative acuity neutralizing any irregularities seen in spherical IOLs. Dr. Piazza is committed to bringing the latest innovations in vision correction and ophthalmic surgery to his patients in Downeast Maine.
Dr. Piazza is a Diplomat of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and is the President-elect of the Maine Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. A Fellow of the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Piazza was initially certified in 1993 and re-certified in 2003. He was a Maine resident in the early 1980’s and again returned to Maine in 1992 after medical school and residency training. He graduated from Chicago Medical School in 1988, and, after completing a one-year internship in Internal Medicine, completed a three- year ophthalmology residency at Barnes Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine, in St. Louis, Missouri.

Walter N. Muth, M.D. joined Dr. Piazza and Coastal Eye Care in 2002 after twenty-seven years of general ophthalmology practice as a founding member of the Wayne County Regional Eye Center, near Rochester, NY.
Dr. Muth’s medical career began in 1970, following graduation from Harvard College and the University of Rochester School of Medicine and completion of an internship in internal medicine at Presbyterian-University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia. That year he joined the U.S. Public Health Service and served two years as a general medical officer and assistant surgeon in Kanakanak, Alaska where he and one other physician provided health care for the community and twenty-six surrounding Native American villages. The excitement and satisfaction of this work led to al life-long interest in health care in remote and difficult circumstances. In 1981, Dr. Muth traveled to Thailand to conduct cataract clinics at several camps serving Laotian and Cambodian refugees. In the summer of 1984 and again in 1986, Dr. Muth worked for the Grenfells Regional Health Service, providing medical and surgical eye care in Newfoundland and coastal Labrador.
Dr. Muth’s ophthalmology training was at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where he completed his residency in 1975. He returned to the Rochester area that year and established an active medical and surgical practice and received an appointment as an Asst. Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. While practicing in New York State he served terms as President of the Wayne County Medical Society and President of the Medical Staff at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital.
Dr. Muth and his family formed a strong and affectionate attachment to Maine, vacationing here each summer for twenty-five years until 2002, when Dr. Muth joined Coastal Eye Care and with his wife, Carol, made Maine his home.
Dr. Muth is now restricting his practice to medical and laser treatment of eye disease including a particular emphasis on glaucoma management. Dr. Muth is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a diplomat of the American board of Ophthalmology, certified in 1978 and re-certified in 2006. He is a Member of the Maine Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.
